About

Hi, and welcome to my website.

I am Hedonist and I started this site as a place to write about some of my interests; cooking and (edible) gardening.

Although my garden isn’t particularly big, I try to grow a lot of my own fruit and vegetables among more ornamental plants. My favourites by far are Strawberries, Rhubarb and Raspberries so my garden is full of all of these and I quite enjoy collecting different varieties. When I initially started growing Strawberries in the garden, I just picked up a few plants from a local shop and although they grew beautifully, I wasn’t that impressed by the flavour. I thought, similar to tomatoes, homegrown fruit would taste a lot better than shop bought fruit because they would harvest the fruit before it has properly ripened so it stores better. Although my homegrown strawberries do taste better than those huge watery ones you find in supermarkets, I felt there was room for improvement.

While thinking about this, I remembered once eating some wild strawberries while on holiday as a child, which tasted so sweet and delicious that none of the commercial strawberries I’ve eaten since could compare. So I researched a bit and found out that indeed wild or alpine strawberries have a superior flavour, however they are not sold in shops because they spoil quickly and the berries are much smaller than the strawberries everyone has got used to now.

So that is how this site came into being – I would like to provide more information about these wonderful strawberries, how to use them, and help people obtain plants to grow themselves at home. And of course also to serve as an outlet for my random ideas, recipes etc.
